Bailey Hunter Robinson is a Brooklyn-based tattoo artist, one of the most inspiring pros working in the mad world of Americana style designs.
Robinson’s been tattooing since he was 21 years old. His skills are next level and the human body is his canvas.
From Alabama to New York
Bailey Hunter spent his childhood in the South Alabama before moving to New York. It’s clear why exactly there, because who doesn’t know of the city’s tattoo traditions. Bailey’s early years of obsession with Native American tattoos brought him to the very place where tattooing in America emerged. Back in the day tattooing was illegal and the Bowery in NY was the mecca for sailors and soldiers. Those spent their nights hanging out in brothels and barber shops. Traditional American tattoo was born there.
Bailey Hunter Robinson and his path to tattooing
When he was only 18 years old Robinson worked in a tattoo shop for free and as an assistant. He didn’t do any tattooing. Instead Bailey went to college for a while but he decided to quit so he can start tattooing. By that time he already had some experience and had started learning the basics.
Bailey’s Americana Style
Robinson has done thousands of tattoos but he remains true to his style. He never does a tattoo that he doesn’t like. He’s using lot of black ink. His tattoos feature heavy shading and thick outlines. His palette is close to the colors of Native American culture. He loves tattooing in red, black and yellow.
Some of his favorite tattoo subjects are horses, birds and snakes. These are more or less the same subjects loved by the pioneers of the Americana style. However, now they are recreated by his own vision.
